  • Alcatel-Lucent board backs Russo, strategy
    Alcatel-Lucent's board of directors came out in support of the company's chief executive officer, Patricia Russo, after what it deems "erroneous speculations" surfaced that it did not back her. "The board reiterated its confidence in the strategic direction taken with the merger of Alcatel-Lucent, the future potential of the company," the board said in a statement. InformationWeek (10/3)
  • O2 launches residential broadband
    O2, Britain's largest mobile-phone company, will launch its residential broadband program later this month. It hopes to attract 1 million customers by 2010. O2 said it would not provide residential telephony services as part of its offering. The Guardian (London) (10/4)
  • BT Group invests in FON
    BT Group announced today that it would take a financial stake in FON, the Spanish wireless Internet startup. As a result, BT will be able to bring free Wi-Fi access to its existing U.K. broadband customers. Once the deal is complete, BT's 3 million broadband customers will get access to any of FON's 190,000 worldwide Wi-Fi hot spots.   • AT&T delivers BlackBerry Connect in new Windows Mobile phone
    AT&T on Friday will start selling the Tilt, a new smartphone running Windows Mobile. Made for AT&T by HTC, the Tilt features tri-band HSDPA and 802.11b/g; three e-mail clients, including BlackBerry Connect; GPS navigation; and a 3-megapixel camera. It also features a sliding, tilting screen and a full keyboard. PC Magazine (10/4)

  • U.K. security law requires logging of all phone calls
    A new security law will require phone companies in the U.K. to log information about all landline and mobile-phone calls and keep those records for one year. The information, which tracks calls made and received, will be made available to 652 public bodies, including local police. BBC (10/1)
