Hey jason,
Ok today I'm going to take you back to one of the
more basic but also most critically important
aspects of creating successful niche sites.
That is keyword research.
This is something nearly every online business
owner has to do at some point and doing it right
can be the difference between mediocre and hugely
profitable "niche" marketing.
Fortunately keyword research is one of my personal
specialties :)
NOTE: Before we get into this email note that I'm
talking here specifically about KEYWORD research,
assuming you've already chosen a niche for a site
you're looking to build. I hope you've already learned
alot about niche research from my previous emails :)
Keyword research is for people trying to generate
search engine traffic (which you all should be trying
to do) - some of the most profitable traffic you can get...
Not to mention it's FREE!
The goal of good keyword research is to isolate
search phrases that you can target with your
search engine marketing. This means locating terms
that people are searching for with the view to
having pages from your websites ranked highly for
those terms, generating quality search engine
traffic.
Before we get into talking about how to find them,
let's look at exactly what is a valuable keyword
and what terms you should look at targetting
as you're getting into your search engine marketing
efforts for the first time.
Broadly speaking, the keywords you want to
target, (and listen closely here...) are...
Those that are most likely to lead you to the kind of
people who are the most likely to purchase our offer/s.
Sounds stupidly obvious right?
Although it is obvious, it's something people seem to overlook.
People want to find the best ratios of search
engine competition to search volume or the keywords
that they think they could get the most traffic
from but forget about the above principle of relevance
of traffic first!
It's been said many times that all traffic isn't
created equal and it's true!
Anyhow, so the next question is how do we locate
the kinds of keywords that represent people suited
to buying from our site?
The first thing you should do, contrary to many
people's teaching is do some marketing analysis of
your own website.
I recommend doing what's called a "Perfect Customer
Profile". What you want to do is highlight with as
much detail as you can, what is the exact profile
of the perfect person who could come to your site.
In other words the kind of person who once they got
to your site would be most likely to take the action you
want them to take.
NOTE: As an affiliate marketer this entails having
an intimate knowledge of the product you're selling
too, something few affiliates have!
Anyway...
This profile actually contains many elements but
basically you want to ask yourself "If I was this
person (who is my site's ideal visitor) what are
the terms I'll be most likely typing into the
search engines"...
It sounds a little fuzzy and you're right, it
will take a bit of thinking!
What you should have at the end however is an intimate
portrait of the motives, thoughts, and desires
of your ideal customer and hence a much better
idea of how to find them and how to serve them.
For example say you have a site about a certain
weight loss pill, let's call it WeightlossRX...
Suppose the pill is a herbal treatment that
helps to reduce cravings allowing you to lose
weight.
What kinds of things would your ideal customer
be typing into the search engine? Start from
the MOST perfect and progress downward...
1. The most perfect visitor for your site is typing in
"Buy WeightlossRX" - no prospect is more perfect
than that except maybe "Buy WeightlossRX NOW"
but that's pretty rare :) Anyone typing that into
the search engine has their credit card ready and waiting
and are most often going to do what you want them to
do without too much convincing, that is BUY!
2. The next most perfect customer is typing
in WeightlossRX, the name of your product.
They've heard about it elsewhere, they're
qualified to some extent, they're going to be
easy to sell.
3. Now it gets more tricky - next most perfect are
people searching keywords like "Buy herbal weight loss pill"
followed closely by "Herbal Weight Loss Pill" etc
They don't know about you or your product yet and
they MAY be ready to buy, but they are looking for
something with the attributes of the product you're promoting.
4. Next might come something like "Weight loss pill
to reduce cravings" and later on "weight loss pill"
etc etc
This is an oversimplified example but can you
see what I'm doing? - I'm starting to brainstorm keywords
without touching any analysis tools yet - I'm
deriving the keywords I'll later analyze and potentially
use from a knowledge of my market and my customer first, not
from random speculation... something so many people forget to do!
Once you have an idea about the keywords you might be
looking to target and the things your perfect customer are most likely
to be looking for THEN you can take them and match
them to the market ie what is ACTUALLY being searched for.
You can use research to discover what people are out
there searching for, for which your site
or product might be a good match, and THAT'S proper
keyword research.
That should be enough to take in for today - we'll
continue this talk about keyword research in our
next email!
Take care,
