Hey jason,
In this email we'll continue our discussion about
finding keyword phrases that are profitable and
ready to exploit in your search engine marketing
efforts.
In the last email we spoke about knowing your own
site/products business from the mind of the
potential customer before beginning actual
research for great keywords to use in our marketing.
Now we'll move to the next step which as I mentioned
is matching the theme of your site and the keywords
you think people would use to find your site to
what's really out there in the market - what people
are actually searching for.
What you should do first is get familiar with
some important keyword research tools - I'll tell you
more about those later but for now, while they're
generally not sufficient for a full blown keyword
reesarch project, the following will serve as a
start point:
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
and
good old Google.com
To get you started, let me articulate what you should
be aiming for as a result of this keyword research
process...
By doing keyword research you want to obtain
a plan for:
1. Iniating search engine traffic
and
2. Continually growing that search engine traffic both
by improving your rankings for certain terms and
increasing the number of terms you're ranking for.
Here's how you can go about that...
You want to start out by locating what are called
long tail keywords in order to initiate traffic
to your website.
Long tail keyphrases are those that are, while
searched for, have less competition, a more specific
focus and initially a greater chance of getting
you traffic.
For example - if you have a weight loss site, you'd
be silly to start out trying to target the term
"weight loss" because it's so competitive you might
NEVER get traffic from your efforts. Instead you could
target a long tail term like (for example's sake)
weight loss and health clinic (assuming that term
was searched for and relevant to your site)...
This term would be much less competitive and could
bring you traffic much more quickly than something
like "weight loss".
Moving on...
So what you first want to do is pick yourself out
a list of 10 or 20 long tail keywords that have the
following characteristics:
1. If you did rank for them - they would provide
TARGETTED, quality traffic likely to become leads
and eventually buyers to your site.
2. Have a good ratio of search volume to search
competition: Many people will tell you different
things but as a guideline try for upwards of
500 searches per month in the overture tool above
and less than 500 000 competing pages in Google
(signified by the "Results" number that comes up
on the right after you search a term).
3. Have some advertisers for Adwords (Adwords
ads visible when you search the term) indicating
demand and potential profitability of leads
searching for that phrase.
This will be a good place to start.
This initial list of 10-20 phrases will be your focus
for the first few weeks, perhaps months of your
niche site.
The great thing about these terms is that they
can provide what we all want - FAST traffic! On
occasions you can even see rankings within the
first few weeks.
The idea is that you should start out targetting
long tail phrases, and as your site's traffic and
income grow, you can leverage that traffic and
income into helping you rank for more competitive
and more highly trafficked terms.
Logically then, what should happen is with time
you do ongoing keyword research to find 10-20 more
phrases that are slightly more competitive and
slightly more highly trafficed to tackle as your
site progresses. Here you use the same ideas but
increase the numbers a little... look for more search
volume, more advertisers, more competition etc.
Here's another helpful tip:
Remember the most profitable words you can find
are "action taking" keywords.
By action taking keywords I mean those that indicate
the person searching it is looking to take some
kind of action favourable to your site, like make
a purchase. Back to the weightlossRX example we used
last time, these are keywords like "Buy WeightlossRX"
"Get herbal weight loss pill" "Where to find weight
loss supplement" and so forth.
The more keywords like this you can find relative
to your niche the better.
The final point I wanted to mention here today
is that without the use of some great analysis
and tools, you'll have a hard time finding the most
number of great keywords you can find, and you
also won't have as great a knowledge of your market
as it exists on the internet without great analysis
either.
For example, when you're researching to find the
best keywords to target for your weight loss site,
you always have to 'come up with' a starting point
or keyword from which you can begin researching.
Thing is however that people will be searching for
weight loss keywords that your humble brain would
not have considered. So what you can do is use analysis tools
that help you think up then locate other, out of the
box type words that can be highly profitable that
you would never have thought up but that people ARE
typing into that search bar.
Also you can use other tools to eliminate even more
of the thinking involved by, for example generating
large keyword lists related to your niche then narrowing them down based
on criteria that you nominate but all done automatically.
Not only that but using only a search engine like overture
only gives you records of the search volume as
recorded by the yahoo search engine which we all know
isn't the most popular or most consistent search
engine. With other tools you can combine the results
of multiple search engines in order to get the most
accurate picture of your market and the most powerful
and profitable results.
Even FURTHERmore you can use tools to actually analyze
the competitiveness and eventually profitability
(ROI - return on investment) of certain keywords
you're looking to target! So you can not only know the most
profitable keywords but HOW MUCH you can expect to
make from them!
It's a whole other level of online business - the
level the pro's operate on.
Personally I no longer use the everyday overture and
Google but a service that combines all of the above
mentioned tools and more - it's so crazy that word on
the street is it could well overtake the most popular
keyword research programs on the web soon. Here's
the link if you want to check that out:

The bottom line of this (because we have talked alot
here) is - what's the value of a single profitable keyword?
I've seen it countless times for my own sites - I'm
targetting a bunch of phrases with my search engine
optimization and I notice a jump in my day to day
traffic...
I check my stats and sure enough I notice that I've
hit a good ranking on one of those seemingly insignificant
long tail keyword!
This same thing happened to my girlfriends mother
when she started setting up her site - we did some
simple keyword research for her and she wrote some
content on a group of keywords. Within a month her so
her traffic had really boosted and we noticed it
was all because she'd hit number one in the MSN search
engine for one of our long tail terms - even months
later that keyword accounts for MOST of her traffic,
Adsense clicks and affiliate sales!
Again, detailed keyword research is the stuff of
real search engine pro's and if you head to this
link and check out the guys with this service
I now use you'll see why:
Keyword Research
They are getting found in the search engines under
more than 11, 000 different keywords for their own
site and generating over 1000 uniques each DAY...
In case it's not blatantly clear, that = MONEY
and lots of it.
Anyhow, we'll talk more about keyword research
in emails to come but I hope this has opened
your eyes a little bit and left you with some action
to take to keep your profits soaring.
Wishing you success,
