  • Verizon Wireless announces open-network plans
    Verizon Wireless plans to open its network to enable any compatible phone and software to work on its network by the close of next year. "This is a transformation point in the 20-year history of mass-market wireless devices -- one which we believe will set the table for the next level of innovation and growth," said Lowell McAdam, the chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless.   • France Telecom eyes 100,000 iPhone sales this year
    France Telecom CEO Didier Lombard predicted his company would sell 100,000 iPhones this year as he outlined plans to expand sales of the handset to 680 stores in France on Thursday. Promotions include late-night hours in some cities and opening of a boutique on Paris' Champs Elysee, Lombard said, adding he expects to sell 1 million units next year. Customers pay just under $600 for the device, plus $73 a month for service to wireless unit Orange. Bloomberg (11/27)

  • Former Iron Curtain nations fuel mobile growth
    Newcomers to the European Union have a higher concentration of mobile-phone users without land-line service, according to a Eurostat report that said 18% of all EU households subscribed only to mobile services. Central and Eastern European countries are fueling much of the rise in mobile usage because the former Communist countries lack the land-line infrastructure of the Western European countries.   • Broadband usage to top 800,000 in Ireland
    Broadband service in Ireland will reach more than 800,000 subscribers by Christmas, with 100,000 of them accessing the Web via mobile phones, according to a Commission for Communications Regulation official. Commissioner John Doherty also said that Vodafone's purchase of Perlico was a strong signal that mobile providers wanted to enter the fixed-line arena. TeleGeography Research (11/26)
