  News of the Day
  • Analysis: Rural telecoms and the economy
Some analysts say they believe rural companies are less prone to the wide economic swings inherent in a slowdown. "Our core business has been steady throughout," said Jeff Gardner, president and chief executive officer of Windstream Corp. "Remember we're in the rural markets. Our defensive nature is by design. That's what attracted investors to this space in the first place." CNNMoney.com/Dow Jones Newswires (1/15)

  • The triple-play bundle has some flexibility
Customers of triple-play telecom services are finding companies increasingly willing to negotiate when they call to switch providers. Analysts say companies, fearful of losing three revenue streams, are moving into "customer-retention mode," a natural development in a maturing market. "We have many options," said a Verizon Communications representative. "We make it clear to customers that it is value, not price, that matters." Telephony Online (1/15)
  • Martin: Economy could damper spectrum bidding
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said Tuesday that the struggling economy could discourage telecom companies from bidding aggressively at next week's auction of wireless frequencies. "Is it an ideal time to necessarily be conducting an auction? I'm not so sure," Martin told reporters. MSNBC/Reuters (1/15)

  • T-Mobile completes 3G tests in sending data via ADSL
In German beta tests, T-Mobile has succeeded in using more efficient ADSL technology to backhaul data from 3G base stations instead of using the traditional leased-line or ATM-enabled microwave connections, according to this article. In the six-month-long trials, T-Mobile encapsulated HSDPA data in the IP stream and appears ready to introduce the technology across its networks. The Register (U.K.) (1/16)

  • Forecast: Asia will drive spread of WiMAX
Asia will dominate the mobile WiMAX market by reaching 40 million customers in five years who will account for more than half of the world market for the 802.16e technology, according to a new report from Juniper Research. The study argues that WiMAX is particularly suited for underdeveloped regions of countries such as India, Korea, Pakistan and Australia, while government backing will fuel its growth in Taiwan. cellular-news (U.K.) (1/16)
