  • Knology: Triple-play bundle ups retention
    Rural telecom-services provider Knology said that its database showed the annual December downturn in subscribers was limited to its cable-only customers and that the company would focus increasingly on striking the right balance in marketing its triple-play bundles between competitive pricing and maximizing average revenue per user.     Australian telecom operator Telstra Corp. reached a 48% market share of the broadband business in the latest quarter, which ended Dec. 31. Space Data, which attaches small masts to the balloons, said it had already successfully used the technology with military and commercial clients and was seeking telecom and broadband partners to join it for a residential service.   • Cisco teams up with cities on energy-saving trials
    Cisco Systems is experimenting with new energy-efficient networking technologies by linking up with cities around the globe with the aim of marketing the successful ones. In San Francisco, in a move to encourage use of mass transit, Cisco is providing wireless access to passengers on a city bus for a service that provides updates on bus and train schedules as well as the usual array of Internet-based applications.     The Italian Trade Commission has tapped Alcatel-Lucent to build a far-flung data VoIP network that would connect more than 80 sites around the globe by combining fixed-line telephone networks with IP and multimedia communications. The deployment would support advanced services such as unified communications and collaborated services, as well as instant messaging and mobility services, the company said.   • Software brings online learning to remote Ontario
    Internet-access areas at 90 remote northern Ontario sites are providing online education and training via technology from Saba Software using a solution that supports both high- and low-bandwidth connections -- sometimes as tenuous as a single telephone link. Use of the Saba software allows Contact North/Contact Nord, northern Ontario's only distance-education and training network, to also provide a literacy program that has connected local students to those in Australia so that they can interact in real time.
