  • FTTH providers find partnerships pay off
Companies that install fiber-to-the-home are increasingly teaming up with home-technology service providers -- also known as integrators -- to maximize efficiencies that they say are benefiting builders, developers and consumers. Connexion's recent deal with Magnolia Audio Video, a Best Buy-owned retailer, is the latest such development. CE Pro (2/4)

  • Asian handset makers show little interest in Motorola
Restructuring of the struggling mobile-phone maker Motorola could be so costly and time-consuming that the major Asian manufacturers have professed little interest so far in buying the U.S. company's mobile-phone unit. The Asian outfits may be reluctant after Taiwan electronics group BenQ's 2005 buyout of Siemens, a move that eventually sent BenQ into bankruptcy. BusinessWeek (2/4)
  • FCC OKs AT&T deal for Aloha's wireless spectrum
The FCC has given a thumbs up for AT&T's $2.5 billion purchase of wireless spectrum from the closely held Aloha Partners, the agency announced Monday, saying the buyout would serve the public's interest. The licenses could cover as many as 196 million customers in 281 U.S. markets, including many in the top 100, according to AT&T. Reuters (2/5)

  • Analysis: Rim will face issues deploying faster DSL chip
Rim Semiconductor will need to convince the telecom industry of the need to change its DSL technology standards if it wants to deploy its new, faster DSL chip that the company claims can move traffic at 40 Mbps over 5,500 feet of copper wire. That's because Rim's approach changes the allocation of upstream and downstream bandwidth to time-division duplexing and uses "rapid bi-directional switching" for faster transitioning of upstream-downstream transport. • Microsoft-Yahoo! would challenge Google's Android
A Microsoft merger with Yahoo! would make the new combination a formidable threat to Google's open-source operating platform for mobile devices, largely because Google has to play considerable catch-up in bringing its system to deployment, according to some analysts. Observers say Microsoft could provide the needed distribution for Yahoo!'s mobile applications, while Yahoo! could give Microsoft the content and services that it lacks to retain users. • SingTel finds Asian expansion getting tougher
Telecom buyouts have become increasingly challenging in Asia because the fast-growing market is gaining an ever-greater number of players, according to Singapore Telecommunications. In an interview, CEO Chua Sock Koong said competition -- not lack of capital -- remained the major issue in limiting opportunities to expand the company's reach as the world's largest players flood the market.
