  • Icahn sues Motorola over access to records
    With Motorola failing to deliver improved results, activist investor billionaire Carl Icahn sued the company Monday in Delaware Chancery Court. Icahn, who holds 6.4% of the company's shares, wants documents related to Motorola's struggling mobile-phone business and other corporate records.   • Google lays out plan for "white space" broadband
    Google has issued a proposal to the FCC to allow the use of vacant TV airwaves to deliver broadband access to wireless mobile devices. The Web giant says the plan works without disrupting signals to TV sets and other equipment. TV broadcasters have long-opposed such a plan, arguing that such devices would interfere with their programming and cause problems during the government-mandated DTV transition next year.   • Indonesia provider said to be expanding aggressively
    Indonesia's largest broadband-service provider PT First Media Tbk is aggressively expanding its subscriber base, according to Sandvine Corp., which is equipping the company. First Media, which had 18,000 subscribers in mid-2007, has set goals of reaching 150,000 customers by mid-2008 and 1 million by 2009, Sandvine said. Forbes/Thomson Financial News (3/25)

  • Reports: IPTV ready for explosive growth in U.S.
    The Yankee Group is predicting IPTV usage in the U.S. may reach 97 million subscribers by 2011, compared with 1.4 million a year ago. Competition for customers is escalating with such force that spending on IPTV/switched digital video equipment could grow from $1.1 billion in 2007 to roughly $11 billion by 2011, according to Infonetics, another research firm.   • Traffic down for portals' TV episodes
    Viewership of TV episodes on Web portals dropped slightly last month, compared with January. AOL TV, which carries ABC content, as well as shows from new channel Hulu and CBS, recorded the heaviest traffic with 10.5 million unique visitors for the month, while Yahoo! TV came in second with 9.6 million, according to Nielsen Online figures. MSN TV suffered the biggest traffic drop, with its monthly tally at 6.8 million visitors. Adweek/The Hollywood Reporter (3/24)

    Bankrupt SR Telecom has agreed to sell most of its WiMAX assets to Groupe Lagasse for about $6 million, the Canadian companies announced.     The upgrade for Microsoft's Response Point small-business system will connect to telecom networks over the Internet rather than by analog, a move that VoIP companies say will result in less expensive calls and simple management.
