  • Technology advancements boost FTTP rollouts
    MDUs are becoming a more accessible market for telecoms for video distribution as technology evolves. Verizon Communications says its FiOS offering is gaining favor with apartment dwellers and their landlords. "It's a matter of technology evolution," said Eric Cevis, vice president of Verizon Enhanced Communities, of the telecom's MDU push. "We have been in the game for a period of time, and some of the costs have come down as we have scaled the program." Telephony Online (3/26)

  • Smart sets IPTV launch across Ireland
    Ireland's Smart Telecom will introduce IPTV service next month in the 37 areas in close proximity to its unbundled exchanges where it sells broadband, the company said. Smart, which will market a DSL-based service to compete with cable operator UPC and satellite-service provider Sky Television, said it would debut with a "soft launch" to customers living closest to its exchanges.   • Verizon Wireless sues telemarketers
    Verizon Wireless has gone to court to learn the identities of telemarketers who the company claims are using illegal "spoofing" techniques to mask their calls' origin in violation of federal laws. In its lawsuit, Verizon alleges the telemarketers, who are peddling extended car warranties, are using auto-dialers, which are illegal under the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act.   • CRTC ruling on Bell Canada parent expected today
    Canada's top telecom regulator will announce its decision on the proposed $52 billion takeover of Bell Canada parent BCE today after the close of U.S. markets. The CRTC will rule on whether the company's broadcast assets would remain in Canadian hands after the sale to a group led by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, which is receiving financing from U.S. investment firms.
