  • Telecom to benefit from growth in IPTV, streaming
    IPTV and streaming video are on pace to create a $70 billion revenue-generating market, according to Insight Research, which says it believes telecoms have the potential to capture a great deal of the revenue. "In our report, we forecast both IPTV as a platform for revenue as well as streaming media [over broadband pipes]. Network-derived services -- encoding, DRM, etc. -- that is the underlying pure play from a telecom point of view. They are going to make money on that," said Robert Rosenberg, Insight president.   • EXFO buys Navtel to expand test business
    EXFO, a Canadian maker of test equipment, has agreed to buy Navtel Communications, a specialist in testing VoIP and IP multimedia systems, for $10.8 million. Analysts say the deal will provide EXFO with better access to telecom-equipment companies, a key market for Navtel, along with carrier labs that conduct pre-deployment testing. Light Reading (3/27)

    AT&T's IP-based U-verse TV service has won a foothold in Louisiana after the East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council approved a local franchise for the company.   • FCC grants HD phase-in plan for satellite-TV operators
    The FCC adopted a phase-in plan Thursday that would give satellite-TV operators until Feb. 17, 2013, to comply with a requirement that they should carry all broadcast HD signals in markets where they carry at least one. Satellite companies were originally required to conform to the FCC HD requirement after the Feb. 17, 2009, DTV transition, but the commission recognized that an immediate mandate would slow the launch of such services.   • Alcatel terabit chipset will take on traffic jams
    Alcatel-Lucent has developed a chipset that will expand the capacity of its routers by tenfold and help handle the burgeoning amount of video traffic on the Web, the company said. The FP2 chipset, which can handle a terabit, will work with the company's 7750 Service Router, and its sibling 7450 Ethernet Service Switch, although users will need to buy new line cards to get the most out of the service.
