  • CenturyTel will use new spectrum on wireless overlay
    Rural telecom services carrier CenturyTel has earmarked the 700 MHz licenses it won during the FCC's recent wireless spectrum auction to boost its wireline voice and data coverage in more isolated areas. The company, which did not disclose its technological plans or a timetable, said it would not gain access to the spectrum until 2009. Telephony Online (4/9)

  • Feds approve EAS system to text cell phones
    The FCC gave a green light to a plan aimed at meeting a 2006 law to establish an emergency alert system through text messages to cell phones. Carriers and consumers can opt out of the three-tier system the FCC created that includes presidential alerts; imminent threats from the weather or a local emergency; and child abductions, the so-called "Amber alerts."   • BBC will link its Web VOD tool to Wii consoles
    In a deal with Nintendo, the BBC will allow viewers to use Wii consoles to use its iPlayer service, allowing Internet users to catch up on the network's programs, the companies announced. The move is aimed at increasing the iPlayer's audience and is consistent with the BBC's strategy to give viewers access to the network's Web-based content. The Guardian (London) (4/9)
  • Study: 44 million homes worldwide will have HDTV by year's end
    By the close of 2008, 44 million homes around the world will have high-definition televisions, according to a new study from Informa Telecoms & Media, which predicts that number will balloon to nearly 180 million by 2012. Simon Murray, principal media analyst with the London-based research group, added that North Americans have led the way with high-def TV adoption, partly because audio and video quality in standard definition "is relatively poor."   • BT will manage Vodafone's high-speed network
    BT Wholesale will deploy its new 21st Century Network-enabled Ethernet service under a five-year deal with Vodafone. The telecom will build and operate high-speed connections that link Vodafone's base stations to its national wireless network.
