The growing amounts of video and user-generated content hitting the Internet will clog the current network to capacity by 2010 without infrastructure investments being made, an AT&T executive said. Jim Cicconi, AT&T's vice president for legislative affairs, said that it would cost $55 billion over the next three years in the U.S. alone to build enough infrastructure to support the traffic. In a move to emphasize its growing telecom businesses, AT&T will lay off 4,600 employees as part of an overhaul of its landline phone business, but intends to hire about the same number of people to fill jobs related to wireless, television and broadband services, the company said. More than three-quarters of Europeans who regularly access the Internet do so via a broadband connections, according to the European Commission's latest i2010 report, which also showed the number of businesses with broadband has risen from 62% of the market in 2005 to 77% today.
