  • Motorola to lay off additional 2,600 workers
    Motorola will pare its work force an additional 2,600 employees, bringing to 10,000 the number of total job losses at the cell phone manufacturer since the onset of 2007. The company, which has proposed turning its handset division into a separate company, said Thursday that severance costs would force the company to take a pretax charge of about $104 million in the first quarter.   • Hesse: Sprint will hang on to Nextel network
    Sprint Nextel will continue using the Nextel network, according to CEO Dan Hesse, a change from the company's prior strategy of shifting Nextel customers to the Sprint backbone. While analysts maintain that running both networks is too costly, Hesse said he wanted to retain customers on the Nextel network "as long as they'll stay." Bloomberg (4/3)

  • Nortel seeks "more efficient" R&D efforts
    In a stated attempt to cut costs while increasing the effectiveness of its research-and-development operations, Nortel Networks outlined a restructuring of its R&D centers Thursday that it says will enable engineers to "innovate more quickly." Highlights of Nortel's plan include placing employees with specific skill sets across its 15 global R&D sites and centralizing engineering processes and platforms under a single group across the entire company.   • Alcatel-Lucent sets first North American WiMAX build
    With experience gained overseas, Alcatel-Lucent will erect its first WiMAX network in North America for Craig Wireless in Palm Springs, Calif., the company said this week. Alcatel, which claims to have commercial WiMAX contracts signed in 22 locations, will build an 802.16e-2005 network that will feature base stations, wireless access controllers, as well as an operations and maintenance hub.   • AT&T offers VoIP options to wholesale clients
    With IP-based telecom services reaching into the majority of businesses, AT&T has introduced VoIP services for its wholesale customers through AT&T Voice Over IP Connect Service (AVOICS) and AT&T Global Hubbing IP Access (GHIA). For AVOICS customers, AT&T has launched a Gigabit Ethernet connectivity interface; and for GHIA users, the company unveiled the AT&T BusinessDirect portal, both of which are aimed at helping companies reduce costs by reducing hardware needs while making it easier to manage their networks. iTnews.com.au (4/4)
