  • Fiber-to-the-home ramps up in North America
    Nearly 10% of all the homes in North America have access to fiber-to-the-home networks, according to a report from RVA Market Research & Consulting, which said that FTTH services are being marketed to 10 million of the nearly 12 million homes that they pass. The number of homes that have the ability to receive video over fiber has increased 36% in the last six months to more than 8 million. Telephony Online (4/8)

  • Intel's venture arm starts $500 million Chinese fund
    Intel Capital has earmarked $500 million for a new investment fund aimed at startup technology companies in China, including those focused on wireless broadband and telecommunications. The Intel Capital China Technology II fund represents the company's increasingly Asian skew: In 2007, Intel Capital had invested nearly 30% of its funds in Asia compared with 63% in North America.   • Verizon gets personal with support
    Verizon Communications is testing a pilot program in Brandon, Fla., that assigns to each FiOS TV or data customer a single "personal account manager," Verizon said. The company has assigned a manager to 800 customers apiece, with each of the employees given a BlackBerry and a six-day, 12-hour work schedule to resolve problems and report back to subscribers.   • AT&T names Verisign's Donovan as CTO
    John Donovan, an executive vice president at Verisign, has joined AT&T as its new chief technology officer. He will oversee the company's global technological strategy and map out its next-generation products and ideas, the company said.   • Cisco to take full control of Nuvoa Systems
    Cisco Systems expects to complete by July a deal to acquire the remaining 20% stake of Nuova Systems, a data-center-technology company that Cisco paid $50 million for an 80% share in August 2006.
