  The Big Idea
  • American Airlines' woes offer lesson in crisis communication
Hundreds of planes left idle. Thousands of passengers left stranded. No one envied the American Airlines execs who had to tell customers their flights were grounded for safety inspections. Kathy Bloomgarden, co-CEO of Ruder Finn, sees in their predicament lessons for all of us in how to communicate during a multiday crisis. Lesson 1: "Communicate right away, do it sincerely, and do it from the top." Harvard Business Online (4/17) Share
Volatile markets. Global competition. New business models. How do HR executives become more responsive to shifting market needs? Find out how over 400 HR executives from 40 countries are addressing these workforce challenges and are focusing on transforming their workforce to take its performance to the next level.

  • Cisco redefines globalization
Most companies globalize by outsourcing services and manufacturing to Asia for products designed for use in the West. Cisco's "chief globalization officer," Wim Elfrink, says that's all wrong. His company is working to tap India's innovation talent. "We are going to create prototype services for this part of the world like connected real estate, the use of mobility, like using web screens for illiterate people ... And over time we will probably export (them) back to the West." said Elfrink, who himself decamped for Bangalore last year. INSEAD (11/1) Share
  • How to hire from left field
Hiring an unexpected job candidate -- someone, say, whose experience is outside your line of business -- is risky. Employees and clients may not appreciate the new hire's talents, but the potential payoff is high, says Margaret Neale, a professor of organizational behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. "People with different backgrounds ask different sets of questions. You ultimately get more information," she said. Here, then are some tips to ensure your recruit from left field is right for the job. The Sydney Morning Herald/Forbes (4/16) Share
  On Leadership
  • CEOs must be ready for prime time
A CEO can delegate a lot of tasks, but when someone has to speak for the entire organization on national television, only the chief will do. Yet few CEOs know how to make good use of fleeting minutes before the camera. Nick Ragone, director of client development at Ketchum PR, advises his clients to take the "Henry Kissinger approach": answer the questions, then quickly bridge to the message you want to deliver. Forbes (4/21) Share
  • Roll the dice while others circle the wagons
When the market goes sour and most CEOs are dwelling on their sad returns, this may be precisely the time for you to launch a new growth initiative. "The best time to place your bets is when competitors are focused inward and when pursuing new opportunities is more affordable," writes Jiri Maly, a principal in the Toronto office of McKinsey & Co. • Nortel goes green to win tech business

    Source: CNBC
Offering customers routers that use 50% less energy than their competitors is just one of the ways Nortel Networks is applying green principles to the tech industry. "We think it is smart business on the one hand, but also very good for the environment as well," says Nortel CEO Mike Zafirovski. CNBC (4/21) Share
  • Science 2.0
The open access principles of Web 2.0 -- the world of instant feedback and running commentary, blogging and Facebook -- is spreading to science. Some researchers are posting their raw data, untested theories and draft papers on the Web for others to see and comment on. "Science happens not just because of people doing experiments but because they're discussing those experiments," says Christopher Surridge, managing editor of Public Library of Science On-Line Edition. Peer-reviewed papers are still important, he says, but "they're effectively just snapshots of what the authors have done and thought at this moment in time." Scientific American (4/1) Share

  • Is tonight the Democrats' Gettysburg?
Sometimes the key to winning can be not losing. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln fired general after general and struggled with the overall management of the war. Conversely, Confederate General Robert E. Lee enjoyed the admiration and respect of soldiers far and wide ... until the battle of Gettysburg. The Times (London) (4/21) Share
