  • Qwest broadens wireless menu with Verizon deal: Qwest Communications will sever its wireless relationship with Sprint Nextel next February in favor of a new five-year deal with Verizon Wireless that will kick off in September, Qwest said. The Verizon alliance gives Qwest a more robust wireless offering as it allows its wireline customers access to the full range of Verizon's mobile services as a bundle and expands Qwest's ability to sell a broadband services to businesses and governments.   • WSJ: Sprint holds internal talks on Nextel's future
    Sprint Nextel reportedly is holding internal strategic talks over whether to sell or spin off its Nextel division, the red-ink-plagued carrier that Sprint bought for $35 billion in 2005. Among the options Sprint is said to be weighing: selling Nextel to a group led by Nextel founder Morgan O'Brien, or to other private-equity firms; or spin the unit off into a separate company.   • USTelecom chief named top advocate for business
    The Hill newspaper recently honored USTelecom President and CEO Walter McCormick for being one of the best representatives for America's business sectors. McCormick is working to promote broadband expansion, the paper said. The Hill (5/1)
  • The winner in the Yahoo!-Microsoft affair? Google
    Google appears to be the true winner of Yahoo!'s efforts to stave off an acquisition bid by software giant Microsoft, which was looking to expand its online advertising presence to challenge Google's dominance. Jackson Securities director of research Brian Bolan wrote: "In the end, Google is the clear winner from the failed Microsoft bid to buy Yahoo!. They retain their lead against the number two and three competitors and continue to make them fight for the scraps that they do not want."
