  • Latin mogul may move into Spain
    The Mexican Slim family, which dominates telecom in Latin America, has set its eyes on the Spanish market three years after one of its companies withdrew from that country's wireless-spectrum auction. "There is an interest from us to participate in the Spanish [telecommunications] market under the right conditions," said Carlos Slim Domit, the chairman of Telmex Internacional and Telefonos de Mexico.   • AT&T aims to connect with Hispanic consumers
    AT&T has enlisted the help of the Lopez family siblings, all three of which are on the U.S. Olympic Taekwondo Team, in a new ad campaign designed to tout the company's telecom services to Hispanics. "We wanted to show the Lopezes interacting together as a family, which is how our [consumer] segment uses technology, and we wanted something fun that would highlight their participation in the Olympics," said Laura Hernandez, AT&T's executive director, diversity marketing.     Fujitsu has announced that it now recommends Provider Backbone Bridging-Traffic Engineering, or PBB-TE, for its packet-optical-networking platform. "Our platform is capable of supporting different approaches," said Sam Lisle, Fujitsu's director of market development. "But right now, PBB-TE is our direction.   • Martin: FCC still backs free Internet plan
    FCC Chairman Kevin Martin told a House subcommittee Tuesday that he will still press to sell wireless frequencies to companies that agree to provide free Internet service despite the lack of interest in the plan in the spectrum auction this year. A subcommittee member asked Martin to take the proposal off the FCC's agenda for today's meeting because the tactic hasn't worked.
