  • EC puts brakes on bid for Euro telecom czar
European telecom ministers have retreated -- at least for now -- from a plan to appoint an industry overseer for the continent, deciding at a Thursday meeting that they lacked enough support from European Union member countries. Viviane Reding, the European Commission member charged with telecom oversight, said her proposal for appointing a telecom regulator would have to be modified, although the EC will proceed with plans to replace the patchwork network of national regulators with a single agency. • Motorola to restructure research unit, cut jobs
Motorola plans to cut about 150 jobs at its research unit in Schaumburg, Ill. Hundreds of other employees will be shifted from Motorola Labs to work directly with business lines they support. "As we make this transition, we have the opportunity to realize efficiencies by streamlining the number of projects and prioritizing those that deliver the most value to our individual businesses and to Motorola overall," spokesman Chuck Kaiser said. Daily Herald (Chicago) (6/12)
  • Yahoo! makes ad deal with Google
After the latest round of talks with Microsoft failed to yield any kind of agreement, Yahoo! has signed a nonexclusive deal with Google for the search leader to deliver ads next to some of Yahoo!'s search results and supply ads on certain of its sites in the U.S. and Canada. Bryan Wiener, chief executive of search agency 360i, said, "Out in the cold, is where this leaves Microsoft." According to one report, Yahoo! said it expects the deal to add between $250 million and $450 million in cash during its first year. As consumer demand increases for multiroom, high-def video streaming, solutions focus on repurposing existing wires to allow for ease of installation and better quality than wireless options typically provide.
