    XO Communications has started working with a growing number of resellers to broaden its Ethernet-over-copper services.   • Samsung's embattled Lee Kun-hee announces retirement
    Former Samsung Chairman and CEO Lee Kun-hee has announced that he will retire Tuesday, a move he promised to make after his indictments on charges of tax evasion and breach of trust. Lee is still employed by the company even though he stepped down from the key leadership positions in April; he remains Samsung's largest individual shareholder.   • Vodafone executive sees femtocells spread across cities
    Vodafone says it believes that femtocells could help spread the development of wireless hot spots across urban areas. The head of new technologies and innovation for the cell phone carrier has proposed building a "metrozone" of the small base stations at bus stops, lampposts or buildings as a way of creating femto access points.   • Compton deploys Motorola's GPON solution
    Canadian cable firm Compton Communications will be the first North American provider to deploy Motorola's Gigabit Passive Optical Networking solution.   • Internet naming conventions to expand beyond dot-com
    The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is preparing to approve a broader variety of domain name suffixes that move beyond the conventional .com and .org to better define and categorize sites. The group gave the go-ahead for an unlimited number of top-level domain names that would allow companies, cities and organizations to use a brand name, acronym or topic in their domain names -- such as ".ebay," ".nyc" or ".news."   • Streaming video, browsing catching up to P2P usage
    Peer-to-peer Internet traffic by a relatively small number of users takes up the vast majority of online bandwidth, but streaming video and Web browsing are gaining ground, according to research from deep packet inspection company Sandvine. "While file sharing remains the largest single category of residential broadband traffic, its rate of growth has slowed relative to streaming media and Web browsing," said Tom Donnelly, the co-founder of Sandvine. xchange (6/25)
