  • Tech giants to create WiMAX licensing alliance
In a bid to minimize the royalty rates that could discourage companies from building WiMAX wireless products, six large technology companies have formed a pool to license WiMAX patents, according to reports that say the group will announce its plans today. • Pioneer McCaw's plans for underdog Clearwire

  • TV viewers driven by convenience to watch shows online
The need to "time-shift" motivates the majority of TV viewers to seek out network shows online, according to this article by Mike Vorhaus, senior vice president and managing director of new media and strategy for Frank N. Magid Associates. Vorhaus' research also shows roughly four in 10 viewers consider ads in Web videos to be "just as acceptable" as those aired during TV shows, another 8% believe they're more acceptable, 19% find online ads less acceptable than TV spots, and 29% are undecided. • Digital TV subchannels in need of viewers, advertisers
The jury's still out on whether hundreds of specialty digital broadcast TV subchannels will find viewers or support from advertisers. One major obstacle to their success is cable carriage -- FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is backing a must-carry rule for all broadcast digital feeds, but the cable industry wants the market to determine which channels are carried on which systems.
