  • Sprint drops out of NGMN over LTE endorsement
Sprint Nextel, a backer of WiMAX technology, has withdrawn from the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance because of the group's support for Long Term Evolution as the fourth-generation wireless standard, Sprint said. "Sprint was disappointed that NGMN shifted from its original technology-neutral stance," said Sprint spokesman John Polivka. "We respectfully withdrew our membership from the organization due to the change in direction." NGMN counts 18 cell phone operators worldwide as members, some of whom have committed to using LTE. • "Retention marketing" good for the consumer, USTelecom chief says
A recent move by the FCC to forbid telecoms from trying to retain customers who are looking to switch to cable goes against "American consumers' market-given right to make a deal," writes USTelecom President and CEO Walter McCormick. "With its adverse impact on everything from market parity to consumer's wallets to free speech, this decision is a stark reversal of the FCC's longstanding efforts to promote regulatory parity among market competitors as a cornerstone of modern communications policy," McCormick wrote. xchange (7/16)
  • Letter: Yahoo! CEO, chairman tell shareholders to be wary of Icahn
Saying a takeover by Microsoft as envisioned by Yahoo! investor Carl Icahn would "destroy stockholder value," Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang and Chairman Roy Bostock, in a letter to shareholders, suggest that Icahn is looking out for his own interests. Icahn has a "strong incentive to strike any deal with Microsoft that enables him to recover his investment and get back his money quickly, even a deal that does not provide full and fair value to you," they write. • Google: Content providers should take "anywhere, anytime" approach
Rather than fighting video-sharing consumers, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told an entertainment conference audience Thursday that the best attitude for studios and content providers in the digital age is an "'anywhere, anytime' consumer model," which turns piracy into profitability. He also said that while newspapers "are in a world of hurt," entertainment providers will prosper as long as they take cooperative, rather than adversarial, relationships with online companies such as YouTube. • Study: User-generated video a ways off from meaningful revenue
User-generated video on the Web may be incredibly popular, but it's not going to be a big source of ad revenue anytime soon, according to this story in Broadcasting & Cable about a new report from TDG.
