  • City vote kills FTTP plan in Minnesota
    A unanimous vote by Hibbing, Minn., council members against contributing $15,000 to a multicity fiber-to-the-premises plan that would have delivered fiber to homes and businesses sparked a consortium behind the project to disband. "The current business model isn't viable without Hibbing. They were 40% of the population base of the project footprint," said Gary Fields, a consultant on the project. Telephony Online (7/28)

  • AT&T details wireless file-sharing policy
    AT&T told an FCC official Friday that it forbids its wireless cell phone customers from using file-sharing applications, adding that it would ban any user caught downloading from such sites. An AT&T executive said the excessive traffic P2P sites generate put undue strains on its network and constituted a violation of its terms of service. Multichannel News (7/28)
  • Analyst: NBC not scaling Olympic heights with Web plans
    Although NBC is planning about 5,000 hours of live and on-demand Web video from the Olympics, the broadcaster is not fully exploiting the medium's interactivity by allowing the sharing of official clips, according to JupiterResearch analyst Emily Riley. "They are being really a Web 1.0 company in a lot of ways," Riley said. "They're not leveraging Hulu for example." ClickZ (7/29)
