  • Cities, communities still attracted to muni fiber networks
Despite the reported failure of a bevy of municipally run Wi-Fi and fiber networks, a number of communities are either proceeding with or seriously considering plans to build their own fiber-to-the-home facilities, made possible largely by the declining cost of fiber. Cities, towns and villages are reportedly taking these steps because they cannot persuade cable and telecom operators to build the sort of broadband networks that local governments want. Telkom told investors Tuesday that the company wanted to act "expeditiously" to conclude its talks with Vodafone for the wireless giant to buy the South African fixed-line provider's stake in mobile operator Vodacom group. Telkom said the discussions were "ongoing," as are talks with a consortium that is considering whether to buy all of Telkom's share capital -- pending the company's unloading of its entire 50% stake in Vodacom.
