  • Federal court rules network DVR does not violate copyright
    In a move that could potentially transform the way advanced video services are rolled out to viewers, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit in New York ruled Monday that DVRs that operate via a central storage server rather than a set-top storage device do not violate copyright law. Analyst Craig E. Moffett said the decision "means a huge increase in the number of viewing hours per day potentially subject to ad-skipping." The use of networked technology paves the way for the delivery of interactive and dynamic advertising via recorded programs.     The Free State Foundation -- a think tank that supports a free market -- has urged the Federal Communications Commission to allow large cable MSOs to team with Google and Sprint Nextel for distribution of wireless-broadband services delivered via a national WiMAX network.   • YouTube to show Olympic content in select areas
    YouTube will provide three hours a day of Olympic programming from Beijing -- but you'll have to live in a country like Nigeria or India to see the coverage because those nations are part of the 77 territories that are not covered by Olympic sponsorships. The International Olympic Committee will supply 500 to 800 segments to YouTube in a deal that will mark the first time there will be global online coverage of the Games.
