  • Sprint Nextel seeks $3 billion in convertible offering
    Sprint Nextel surprised analysts Wednesday in saying the company would raise $3 billion through the sale of perpetual convertible preferred stock, a revelation that sent the stock spiraling 11% after a downbeat earnings release. Sprint said it would use the funds for "general corporate purposes, which may include, among other things, debt reduction," but one analyst said the offering could dilute the value of Sprint's already shrunken stock price an additional 10% to 15%.   • BCE reports strong wireless growth, though profit dipped
    Canada's BCE added 111,000 postpaid wireless subscribers in the latest quarter, its best results in terms of growth in more than two years after a pickup of just 43,000 customers a year earlier, said the company, which will soon be taken private. Profit fell because of a one-time asset sale recorded a year earlier, but wireless revenue climbed 11% as Web-surfing phones proved a popular item, though the company added that new competition could crimp future sales.     With WiMAX technology rapidly gaining favor in Russia, the country's Comstar-United TeleSystems has awarded Nortel a contract for supplying its Moscow network.   • Study: Wireless-broadband subs set to double
    Wireless-broadband subscriptions will more than double from 2007 to 2011, according to a study from Infonetics Research.   • FCC to test unlicensed devices at FedEx Field, Broadway theater
    The FCC has announced it will hold sports- and theater-venue field tests of unlicensed mobile devices during the Aug. 9 preseason contest at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., between the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills, and during the week of Aug. 11, at an undisclosed Broadway show. Sports and theater producers share a concern that the use of unlicensed devices in the broadcast spectrum will disrupt their wireless microphones, according to this article.
