    Fueled largely by demand from AT&T and Verizon Communications customers, the number of Business Ethernet services rose 16% in the first half of the year, according to Vertical Systems Group's latest market analysis. "Most providers steadily increased their port deployments, spurred by new Ethernet service offerings and migration of larger customer networks," said Rick Malone, principal at Vertical Systems Group. xchange (9/5)

  • Alcatel-Lucent Americas chief Christy resigns
    Cindy Christy, the head of Alcatel-Lucent's Americas region, is resigning for "personal reasons," to be replaced on an interim basis by Jim Cocito, her chief operating officer, the company said Friday, but gave no timetable for her departure. Christy resigned three days after the company named former BT Group CEO Ben Verwaayen to replace colleague Pat Russo as CEO. Telephony Online (9/5)
  • Muni-sponsored Wi-Fi alive and well in Philly
    EarthLink may have abandoned Philadelphia's plan to provide subsidized Wi-Fi service to low-income residents, but, equipped with a new business model, a group of local investors may have righted the ship. Officials at the nonprofit, city-sponsored Wireless Philadelphia say a new nonexclusive contract also helped turn around the situation. CNET (9/5)

    As of Oct. 1, Nokia's N96 smartphone will be equipped to run the BBC iPlayer by downloading the free application from the U.K. broadcaster's Web site, although Nokia will install the feature on select phones, the companies said. A March auction for the same frequencies received only a single bid, but municipal groups have attacked the FCC's plans, maintaining the government should hand over the spectrum directly to the individual localities.     Google's attempt to put its lucrative search-related ads in front of mobile-phone users has created little buzz among developers and consumers, according to this analysis, which says the open-source Android operating system has failed to generate much excitement yet among consumers. Developers say they are taking a wait-and-see attitude toward Android, rather than rush to produce applications for a platform whose future could largely lie in the hands of handset makers and telecom carriers.
