One of the best ways to promote a white paper,
and collect dozens, hundreds or possibly thousands
of sales leads within just a day or two, is renting
space in trade magazine email newsletters.
Today, a story from one of my students about doing
just that.

On my website there's a testimonial from Eric
Ruth of DMI, a company that sells billing services
to credit unions. Eric used to be the sales manager
at that company.
A few months ago Eric left DMI to start his own
company, as a business consultant to personal
trainers and fitness specialists. He just sent me this
testimonial about using a White Papers approach with
space he rented in an email newsletter:
"Using the White Papers Course I created a PDF Special Report
with a killer title. I bought a $250 email newsletter ad that went
out to 18,000 targeted suspects. I followed your guidelines for
writing compelling teaser copy for the report.
The newsletter ad included my copy and a link to my website
landing page with a simple form to be completed in order for
the prospect to gain access to the Special Report. Two hours
after the email newsletter was mailed out, the ad rep from the
newsletter company called to inform me that I had, in two hours,
broken the record for click-throughs from one of their newsletters.
The newsletter went out on a Monday, by the end of the week
862 prospects had completed the form on my site to download
the Special Report. This represents almost a 5% conversion
rate, but more importantly, a cost per qualified lead of just
29 cents!
But wait, it gets better. The Special Report made offers for two
digital products I sell, one for $67 and one for $97. As of this
writing, just 30 days since the newsletter was mailed with my ad,
I've made 84 sales (cost per sale is a meager $2.98) for a total
of $7,638. Each of these small products up-sell a larger, $397
product.
Six of the 84 have purchased the $397 product for a total of
$2,382 (those who buy the $397 product are prime prospects
for my high-end consulting). Of course, I am consistently
marketing to all 862 leads and more sales will follow. But this
one strategy alone, in about 30 days, has generated total sales
of $10,020 from $250 in marketing dollars, an ROI of 40:1.
I am, to say the least, thoroughly impressed with your marketing
acumen, I rabidly devour your newsletters and have been on just
about every tele-seminar you have offered. You are truly a
marketing master-in-the-making.
